What I've been up to lately...
Story published in
Chicken Soup For The Soul: The Magic of Cats
I was thrilled that my poem, "Ode To Frankie Cat," about learning to live with and love my husband's first "child," was chosen to be included in this wonderful anthology.
National Poetry Month Poem-A-Day Challenge
During the Month of April, I participated in a poem-a-day challenge, run my #PBChat Mentor and friend, Lori Degman. Lori supplied a random word each day, with which I wrote a poem incorporating it into a rhyme pair. During the craziness of the Covid-19 pandemic, having a specific task to focus on every day was extraordinarily helpful for my state of mind. I gave myself permission to be free and write about whatever popped into my brain. It was an incredible exercise in both creativity and endurance.
#PBChat Mentorship Program Selected Mentee
I was fortunate enough to be chosen by incredible rhyme writer Lori Degman as her mentee in the #PBChat Mentorship Program. Over three months, we worked together to polish my manuscripts into super-shiny, submission-ready shape! More importantly, we've now become great friends and colleagues. I'm so grateful for her guidance and support.
Here's what Lori said about why she chose me as her mentee:
"I knew I wanted Rebecca to be my mentee from the first stanza -- and I was hooked the whole way through her manuscript -- multiple times! Her story is so original and masterfully written, with great rhymes and meter." - Lori Degman
First Place WINNER of Susanna Hill's Holiday Contest for Children's Writers!
The challenge: Write a story for children, no longer than 250 words, about "a holiday treat."
My story, "THE GREATEST LATKE TOPPING" was chosen by the judges as one of 11 finalists, out of approximately 150 applicants, then put up to a vote from the general reading public. And guess what?! I WON!!!
Here are the first two couplets of my entry...
Each Hannukah, the latke toppings have their own tradition:
head-to-head, they battle in a lively competition.
For Applesauce and Sour Cream, the rivalry is vital —
each jockeying to win the “Greatest Latke Topping” title!
Poems published in Honeycake Magazine
December 2019 and April 2020
This wonderful new Jewish children's magazine provides activities, stories, and poems for creative kids. My poem, "Blank Page," appeared in the December 2019 issue and, another, entitled "Elijah's Visit" appears in the April 2020 issue.

Poem published in Highlighter, the newsletter of SCBWI Mid-Atlantic
My poem, Red Handed, is a tongue-in-cheek ode to the writer's constant struggle with "killing our darlings."
